TOE FO'I ILE LAU'ELE'ELE
Toe Fo’i ile Lau’ele’ele is Samoan for return to the land, return to mother nature. This project pursues to reinforce the connection between our well-being and mother earth, in a similar manner that our ancestors learned and lived. Samoans for many generations lived off the land and appreciated what the ground soil provided and shared. Our Amerika Samoa Humanities American Recovery Plan (A.S.H.A.R.P) project aims to utilize our Samoan culture’s appreciation of the land to cultivate the wellbeing of the “Self”. A good understanding of our world enables and reaffirms an appreciation of greater earth, and this informs and nurtures our mindfulness and humanity.
In particular, by studying local plants, wildlife, waters, and land we become stewards of the “Self”, of the environment, of the Samoan people, culture, and language. For example, when we study plants, we know scientifically that plants conduct photosynthesis by taking the carbon dioxide that we breathe out, the water from the soil, and sunlight to make food and the oxygen that we breathe. We apply this knowledge and examine how Samoans used plants (i.e., food, stories, medicines, etc.) and combine it with the healing power of nature to discover and reflect our purpose.
