About Us
Nature's Educational Laboratory of American Samoa (NELAS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship through education rooted in Samoan culture. We believe that some of life's greatest lessons are learned beyond the classroom—through the land, the ocean, and the traditions that have shaped our communities for generations.

Our Roots
A Legacy Rooted in Family and Nature
NELAS was founded in 2019, inspired by the childhood experiences of its founders and the enduring wisdom of their grandmother, Fola Tuato'o.
Growing up in American Samoa, they spent countless hours in family plantations, fishing along the shoreline, and gathering resources from the land. These moments were more than daily activities—they were lessons in resilience, responsibility, respect, and service. Every outing became an opportunity to learn from nature while strengthening their connection to Samoan culture and family.
Those early experiences became the foundation of NELAS. Today, the organization transforms traditional knowledge into meaningful educational opportunities that combine place-based science, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship. By connecting learners to the natural world, NELAS continues the tradition of teaching through experience while preparing future generations to care for the islands they call home.

The Legacy of
Aiga Fealofani Tuato'o
The values that guide NELAS are deeply rooted in the life and example of Aiga Fealofani Tuato'o. His dedication to family, hard work, humility, and respect for the land continues to inspire our mission today.
His legacy reminds us that education begins long before a classroom. It begins in the stories we share, the traditions we preserve, and the responsibility we carry to protect our environment and serve our communities. NELAS proudly honors that legacy by ensuring these lessons continue to inspire future generations.
